100 metres by 60 metres field of play. 6,000 seats all housed within the air conditioned arena.Al Shaqab is an equestrian academy and part of the Education City complex being developed by the Qatar Foundation for the people of Qatar. The master plan of the academy is arranged in a circular configuration with the perimeter ancillary structures establishing a protective “courtyard” for paddocks, the elliptical Emir’s stables and the Performance Arena. The Performance Arena, with a height of 34 metres, is the focus of the composition. It has three primary functions: as warm-up area and two performance arenas – one indoor and one outdoor. Conceptually, the building is treated as three distinct elements; the plinth base, the roof and the infill glazed wall that links the two. The roof-form that aims to recall traditional desert tents hovering on the horizon is curved in two directions with its high point over the indoor arena. The roof cantilevers over the north and south indoor arena walls and the external face of the grandstand to provide shade. Other buildings within this 100 hectare sporting complex include stabling for 400 horses, where sustainability issues of natural lighting and ventilation enhanced by air-conditioning has produced some of the most comfortable and advanced stabling in the Middle East. A breeding centre with barns is served by a hospital and laboratories. A central administration area includes a complex of offices, workshops, stores and staff quarters.
